Abbot Yizhao of Hong Kong Zhulin Zen Temple passed away at 5:20 pm on January 5, 2013, at Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong.
Abbot Yizhao was a disciple of Master Xuyun and held the lineage of Master Xuyun. His departure marks another great loss to the Chan Buddhism lineage, following the passing of the venerable Master Benhuan, a prominent figure in Chinese Buddhism, last year.

Abbot Yizhao ordained as a monk in 1941 and received the precepts at Nanhua Temple in Guangdong in 1944. He followed Master Xuyun closely, listened to his teachings, and benefited greatly from them. The master and disciple left behind many inspiring stories, which have become widely known. Later, Abbot Yizhao came to Hong Kong, first serving at Jingyuan Monastery in Sha Tin, and then taking over as the abbot of Zhulin Zen Temple, a position he held until his passing. Abbot Yizhao inherited the Linji Zen lineage from Master Xuyun and was regarded as a virtuous and respected figure in the current Chan Buddhism. In order to alleviate the suffering of sentient beings in the six realms, Abbot Yizhao took Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha as his role model and vowed, "I will not attain Buddhahood until all sentient beings in the Saha world are liberated." He was also praised as the incarnation of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. It is reported that Abbot Yizhao received the empowerment and blessing of the Third Dzogchen Rinpoche, who recognized him as a "rare and enlightened monk with exemplary precepts and conduct."
