Recently, we have received news that some Rinpoche, monks, and Dharma centers are forcefully charging 500 yuan or varying amounts as a "Dharma listening fee" from pedestrians who come to respectfully listen to the Buddha's teachings. The Office of the Third Dodrupchen Rinpoche is deeply shocked by this and considers it to be deceitful behavior. Therefore, we hereby make the following announcement:
Firstly, the Third Dodrupchen Rinpoche has clearly stated in his teachings multiple times that the purpose of the Buddha's teachings is to liberate sentient beings from suffering, not to exploit them. We should strive to fulfill the wishes of anyone who has the intention to learn the Dharma, cultivate virtue, benefit sentient beings, and seek liberation. This includes sacrificing our own interests and doing our best to help others find happiness. We should not judge others based on their wealth or social status.
Secondly, it is appropriate for pedestrians to show respect for the Dharma. If someone voluntarily establishes a Dharma center or supports and sustains a particular Rinpoche, monk, or Dharma center, it is their own heartfelt intention. This is the power of pure aspirations and the accumulation of merit and virtuous deeds. No one should impose compulsory rules or exert pressure to collect money, as this goes against the purpose of spiritual practice and constitutes negative karma. If anyone insists that disciples must pay in order to listen to the Dharma, otherwise they will be denied access, it is equivalent to selling the Buddha's teachings. This is an evil act and a disrespect and insult to the Dharma, deviating from the Buddha's teachings. Some people may already be facing financial difficulties, and instead of charging them, those who have wealth should use their money to help them. Dharma centers should not force people to pay in order to listen to the teachings; instead, they should support those in need. We must not lose sight of our original intention to exchange our bodhisattva vows for the benefit of others.
Thirdly, the Third Dodrupchen Rinpoche has already publicly announced that he does not accept offerings. He has not even accepted direct offerings from his disciples, nor has he accepted offerings from Rinpoche, monks, or Dharma centers. Not only does he not accept offerings, but he also donates the money he earns from selling his paintings to temples and to help the poor and victims of disasters.
Fourthly, the Office of the Third Dodrupchen Rinpoche has not accepted any offerings and will not support any deceptive actions that require payment to listen to the Dharma or any acts that disrespect the Buddha's teachings.
This announcement is hereby made.
